4 Generations Family Photography – and my favorite college professor

I was delighted to hear from my favorite Lewis & Clark College professor this spring.  Dick Adams taught me so much about life, listening, management, compassion through not only his very unusual teaching style (see Pablo Freire) but his way of looking at the world.  Over the past 20 years, I’ve seen him only twice before taking these photos of his wife, Wendy’s family.  Once was the night the 2nd Gulf War broke out.  I was walking in downtown Portland and found myself at the Unitarian Church.  I am not religious. It was, however, the right place to be that night to think about the state of the world.  I just sat and thought, whereas, when the 1st Gulf War started, around my college graduation, I protested.   Seeing Dick sitting quietly there thinking as well was comforting.   We exchanged a hug, a few words and some level of understanding that night.  The second interaction was about 5 years ago when I stumbled upon his brainchild, ZAP http://zimbabweartistsproject.org.  We met, talked about the AIDS crisis in Zimbabwe and how he was bringing in artwork from female artist to sell in Portland.  Happy to contribute in a small way, I helped them set up a method to photograph there artwork for the web and then did not see Dick again.  So when the phone rang and it was Dick asking if I would photography his wife Wendy, her 86 yr old mother, her daughter and her daughter’s three children the only answer was Yes!  We took what was going to be a one image shoot (recreating it from a childhood photo Wendy had) and turned it into an event.  We drank mimosa, posed with Vanity Fare flare and had makeup and hair by Kirstie Wright http://kwmakeupartist.com  It was chaotic and hectic but you would never know it from the images.  My favorite part?   Delivering the artwork over dinner where Dick, Wendy and I caught up on life, love, loss and what we will create in the world now- 20 year later.  Come.  Let’s learn to use a hammer and work a day under Dick’s new found leadership with Habitat for Humanity.  Thank you for being still teaching me, and so many others,  Dick Adams.

Exciting to work with TaylorMade Adidas Golf  http://taylormadegolf.com this past week at Riverside Golf and Country Club http://www.riversidegcc.com   We loved meeting Jon and working with the creative director.   Nice people, beautiful location, great work.  Commercial athletic photography is always enjoyable.  The weather was perfect and spending the morning doing photography on a golf course is not a bad way to make a living at all!
